WA Transmission question

So ill start by saying i have a 1989 S5 TII with a manual transmission. My transmission has been grinding second gear for a few months now and now other gears are starting to grind as well. I would like to rebuild the transmission but i was wondering if it's possible to beef it up a little when i do so. Ive looked at a few site like mazdatrix.com and pineappleracing.com for some sort of rebuild kit or even just ordering all the pieces i need separate but haven't had much luck. So if anyone has any info on where to purchase stuff to rebuild my transmission that would be great.

There really isn't a need to do this unless you are running past 500 wheel HP. After that your options are kind of limited since there aren't any aftermarket gear sets. Shot peening, cryo treating, etc.

You might want to look at some hygiene things before taking that plunge.

Our 90 Tii vert has a JDM import so first we ran it with cheap gear lube and it sucked. But we left it like that for a couple hundred miles to get everything flushed out. Then we put Royal Purple Gear Lube and it shifted really nicely then.

But our 91 MR2 turbo ground more than an espresso machine at Starbucks. Bleeding the clutch helped a bit and then switching from Royal Purple Gear Lube to Redline Lightweight Shockproof resulted in a complete transformation. It was miraculous. Best $40 I've spent on a car. But you might want to check the forums to see if there are similar options on the RX7 box. The MR2 is a transaxle while the RX7 is a transmission so they may respond differently.

Another hygiene thing on the 7 you might want to check is the shifter base. The plastic parts in there break up and then shifting is sloppy. Mazdatrix has a kit I think.

Should you decide the tranny has to go and you want to rebuild it then I suggest calling Ray Crowe from Malloy Mazda. Do a search on the forum to check that. I'm old and forget details. He gives RX7Club discounts and is an all around good guy.

Another option might be to watch the FS threads or check http://www.car-part.com/ to find a used tranny. Then you could swap it in. If it is satisfactory, then great. If not, then you can rebuild the original one at your leisure.

Good luck!

i recently talked to a guy at quaife engineering. and they have 6 speed conversions for the TII 5 speed and it also has dog engagement. buuttt.. the downside is that he needs atleast 6 people to buy before they will make again. and he wouldnt give me a price but last i saw they were about $6000 uk http://www.quaife.co.uk/product_sear...archString=rx7

I agree with vrracing. This past year I swapped a TII engine and drivetrain into my 89 vert and the transmission was grinding going into third. I used regular gear oil for first 1000 miles. I bought the cork sport short throw shifter kit( comes with all bushings) and then replaced the gear oil with redline 75W90NS (10.99 a quart). Works great now.
