transmission question...

OK...I have an excessive amount of vibration coming from my transmission. I imagine that my trans mounts are just old and nasty.

The problem that concerns me is this odd clunking sound coming from the trans when I shift. I can feel the clunk in the clutch pedal and in the shifter. It seems to only happen when i'm shifting gears or when I slowly let the clutch out while slowly gassing it. This all started about 3 days ago. Earlier this evening I heard a rattle with the clutch out and the trans in neutral. I pumped the clutch a few times and the rattle would go away when I depressed the pedal...but return when I let it out.

I imagine that my throw-out bearing is toast, but i've always had a constant rattle when the bearing fragged....not just for a few minutes.

Anybody have any idea as to what is going on??

S4 TII, BTW....

clunk during shifts = possible bad drive shaft joints

I'd hate to have to post a pic of my driveshaft =(. The joint was busted and I drove it like that for a good month including a 400 mile round trip. Finally got a replacement, and I was lucky that I didn't die =)

my u-joints are fairly new on my d-shaft....

i'm hoping it's not the input shaft bearing inside the transmission....

I'd check the gear oil, just pull out the filler bolt on the side and stick your finger in, if you can feel fluid your fine if not your low. If your flexable enough you can do it without jackng the car. This kinda sounds like its running dry.
