Transmission problems

hey, i just got my 88 RX7 about 10 months ago, and i recently experienced an extreme transmission problems, i cant hear my car shift up, and i cant reverse. here are some things about my car. keep in mind i searched the forums, and i am kinda dense about cars.

-Its an automatic transmission, non turbo
-about 78k miles
-SE

and thats all i know, if you guys could help me out with figuring out what my problem is, id be extremely grateful, and if you need to know more about my car, and have ways for me to determine something that i could do, id be more than happy to figure this out.

and another question i had would be how much would it cost me to get the parts to rebuild my transmission?

Congrats on buying the RX-7 with low miles. That means you wont be needing an engine rebuild in the near future. But now for the bad news. You have an automatic. From what I have heard they were never good for these cars. I suggest finding a 5-speed to replace it with, and search for the upgrade/swap in the forums.

Ahh good choice. The only thing that could go wrong is when you swap to the flywheel. If you have Kevin Landrs do it then he will make certain its done properly. There is also a brace you will have to make for the manual gearbox, as well as finding a new bit of console trim, but those are easy. Id be on the lookout for other things too, but if you have someone perfrom the conversion you will be happy with the more responsive car.

I just got back last night from my Kevin Landers(Rotary Resurrection) NA Auto to TII 5spd swap. BEST THING I EVER DID FOR MY CAR!(91 vert) Automatic trannys on Rx7s suck don't even think about rebuilding it. PM Rotary Ressurection and see if he can throw a swap together for you.

There will be a few parts you will need for the swap. I myself have a couple you will need. You can also get some from Indyparts if you PM him.
