Transmission? Help!

Hello,
Thank you in advance for any help you can give me. I have a 1988 RX7 GTU that I really love. In the past few months it has begun to make noise from an area below my stick shift. It has gradually increased in volume, and occurs most brutally, when I am on the freeway over 50 mph. Does that seem like a transmission issue? If so, does anyone know where I can find a replacement that is not too costly? Manual 5 speed.
In addition, I get water leaking from the passenger side underneath the dash board. It is most likely a broken heater core. Does that sound correct? I could not find any information on this issue in the factory service manual.
And one last thing, I can't open the driver side door from the outside. Is anyone familiar with what I need to do to get that operational again?
Thank you for any guidence you might offer. Just like most of the people in the Bay Area, I don't have a reserve cash flow available to dump into my car. Your creative thoughts, on how I can wing getting my car back 100% will be greatly appreciated.
Gregory

From your other post:

Will that work for my car?
Thank you for your reply! Can you give me more information about this? That would be a great price for a working transmission, that would fit my car. What is the approximate price to ship coast to coast. Do you know a company that ships items like this? Thank you again, and if I can find away to verify that you have what I need, in working condition, I would jump on it.

Shipping is about 75.00-100. I will use LTL Truck frieght and ship it frieght collect. Pick it up at the terminal to save some bucks

Two possibilities. It could be the tranny bearings. The noise increases with the increased speed. Vibration can be felt through the tranny almost the whole speed range, especially in the final gear. Depending on the bearing, it may occur within all 5 gears. That can be checked by draining the oil and looking for large amounts of metal shavings in the bottom on the magnetic plug. The shavings will be large also or Flakes. Very small grainy type wear is common and acceptable. Another possibility is a bad rear end resonating back through the car. This can be checked with the same procedure of draining oil and checking. This is no guarantee, but a good indicator. Possibly better to take it to a mechanic and let him look at it for a few bucks to determine what is bad.

For some reason, I thought the GTU tranny was the same as a TII, but I could be wrong. Look at the tranny itself. Does it have a "Rib Cage" look or a smooth body. If it is smooth, one piece bell housing, it is a standard tranny. If it is a two piece (bell housing bolted to the gearbox) and the gearbox has ribs, it is a TII tranny. They are not really interchangeable.

Most likely the door handle is broken and needs replaced. Used ones running around $25 for the color you need. The mount point breaks for the rod. Also it could be the rod or the latch assembly binding or rusted where the door hits the striker.

The leaking heater core needs a new heater matrix as the heater core is inside of it. Not an easy task and not for the faint at heart. It is almost easier to remove the complete dash (very pain in the a$$ to do) to easily access it, but can be done without removing ( I believe, not sure).

I have a good heater matrix, but it will take me some time to remove if you decide to go that route.
