After doing some research I went with Redline MT-90 for the tranny. The closest place that sells it is 75 miles away so I ordered it and it should come in late this week. I'll let ya'll know how it is when I get it in.

I just replaced my Redline MT-90 with RP 75W90.
Guess what...
No change.
Both are good fluids.
I wouldn't hesitate to use either.
I went with the RP cause Checkers carries it locally in stock.
I would've had to order Redline and wait.

Yeah, I almost did the same thing, ted. I decided to wait, though, because RP stuff is 12 dollars a quart, plus tax, so I'm looking at about 65 bucks for the diff and tranny fluid at o'reilly's. I ordered redline for 40 plus 6 (or 7) for shipping, so I saved about 20 bucks. I also don't expect the car to be running until later this week so it was useless to spend the extra money anyway.

Im a big redline fan, I use the Mt-90 and 75w90 for the tranny and diff in all my 7's. i remeber before i changed teh fluid in my 88 n/a, i took it on a 400 mile trip and it was making a lot of noise by the time i got back. i thought the tranny was toast. I changed the fluid with mt-90 as soon as I got back, and now the tranny is like new again.

i used redline and it got rid of the 2ND gear grind...BUT, when it was below 50 degrees outside and the tranny was cold...it was pretty tuff to get into gear...i cant say anything about royal purple because i have never tried it.....this was with a N/A tranny and at LEAST 260WHP daily abuse on it...so redline is good to me

wow. This thread is archive material.

I came across this and thought I'd update... my car saw some use this year in colder weather (-5 to -10C) and the tranny shifted fantastic. Even the very first shift after sitting 4-5 months was crunch free. the RP fluid is really great stuff.

quick question.. my tranny is STIFF.. i can bearly shift into ANY gears. could it be that it doesnt have any fluids.. at all?? or too thick of a fluid, havent had a chance to look. my old tranny in my other 7 shifted good but whined in the higher RPMS.. just curious if THAT is normal also?

You're the one sitting there with the gearbox- how hard can it be to check if it has oil in it or not.
Hell, it could be full of sand or weasels- both of which would cause stiff shifting- but how are we supposed to know?

well, to be honest. its about as hard as it is to get a decent response from a fellow member without getting an uneeded remark buddio . -Hell, it could be full of sand or weasels. i mean come on, we all know weasels live in the pumpkin of the rearend! gawd.

im leaning towards it being full of sludge where the shifter is but i have no clue how to get it out. i put gear oil through the top hopin it would loosen things up or smoothen it out, but nothing changed. i'll change the gearl oil in both the rear end and the tranny today.. nothing better to do haha. sorrry for bothering you with a lazy question.

i'll try royal purple today since its in stock at my nearby autoparts.

spend the money, get it changed. That's some good advice. Use either Redline, Neo or Royal Purple.
