transmision whining noise

i just bought a 1988 rx-7 and the guy who sold me the car had just finished putting in a used 5 speed transmission on it, problem is it whines on first and second, the sound is similar to the whining sound that the car does in reverse. the owner said that it has bad transmission oil and that i have to change the transmission oil. i would like to hear your thoughts on this and if you have had this problem before and what caused the whining noise.

I would say it is low on gear lube.

If the oil is contaminated it wouldn't hurt to put new lube in.

Its hard for most to say when they are not there hearing it in person. Explaining a noise is possibly the hardest thing to do when describing a problem and w/o first person contact can be hard to help diagnose. There are tons of things it could be bearings, syncro's, throw out bearing, even the clutch disk if it were slipping i suppose.

i agree

yea it is hard to say for sure like somebody said but here is the deal im in my manula trans class now at LTI and were going over problems and sounds if you have the man power and the resources pull the trans check the gears for fractuers blehmeshes blah blah blah but the most important part check the clutch plate or preasuer plate now dont flip out if there are semi black spots take a high grit sand paper and scrub that out if you know what you doing if not take it to a machiner (might be expensive) since you said its used you are also ganna looking for what we like to call "the black plaquge" if you see spots on the clutch plate that are black crhome then the "hot spots" have gone though the clutch plate and its time for a new clutch asembly if everything is fine then the guy who "put a used one in" probly didnt know what he was doing and didnt asemble it the right way so put everthing back tourq it the way it was suposed anytime there is metal on metal contact it might be a good idea to slap some lube on there if it still whines afterward buy a new trans or a rebuilt one....... now im not ganna sit here and give you a play by play on who to do it so if your not a tech. dont try to be one and do it your self with something with such small parts you might fu** something up lol reading about doing something and doing it are two difrent things...... good luck have fun and if you cant have a good one have a cold one

anymore questions contact me

Thumbs up

i had the same issue and i searched the forum. mostly is saying that throwout bearing.

but before taking down tranny and changing bearings, according to our fellow members try flushing fluid.

Thats what i did put MT-90 redline transmission fluid and differential. it was like magic... the sound is still there but not as loud and my shifting is super smooth.

good luck to you. .

whining and whirring = worn gears
rumbling and growling = worn bearings

It's not going to be a tob or pilot like people are saying...

The transmission in my car had 180k on it when I swapped it in. It whirrs and rumbles a little in final drive, but with new gear oil, it has made no negative changes for the past 20k miles. As long as it shifts properly and isn't vibrating profusely, don't sweat it.

If it were a TOB it would make the noise when the pedal was depressed and you might also feel rumbling and vibration through the pedal.
