Transmision questions

Ok I have my tranny out to replace the clutch fork pivot.(act extreme pressure plate) Well anyhow I decided to do the shifter bushings and stuff at the same time so I drained the oil from the shifter housing and now when I go to put the plug, spring, and lock ball in place I can't really shift it other than first and second gear, but with them not in I have no problems shifting. I took a look at the FSM but couldn't get anything useful out of it. Please help if you can, it would be greatly appreciated I really want to get her back on the road. Thanks
Dom

After 2 hours, probably not.

Anyways... I would assume they're necessary. They're in there for a reason.
