Exclamation Trans Grinding

In my 86 NA.The transmission is grinding. Started yesterday and it only happens in very specific way. At about 2100rpm-2800rpm and at approximately 35percent throttle it sounds like gravel in the first four gears(1st 2nd 3rd 4th). Im pretty sure the trans is original as I bought the car as a non runner 2 years ago; so the trans should have about 198k.

So Im wondering if i should plan on getting a another trans and what is broken in there. Also how difficult it is to rebuild the trans. i cant afford to have someone else do it.

Furthermore there is no vibrations or any break in acceleration. the car drives the same except for the noise(which isnt very loud)

Also I want to do a turbo swap in the future so, would it be profitable for me just to get a t2 trans and flywheel and modify the drive shaft to fit. or just swallow the costs and stick with a easy replacement.

Are you sure it's not just a rattling exhaust? Sometimes at that engine RPM, it matches the resonant frequency of something coming loose like a catalytic converter or a heat shield. And it won't do it when you rev the engine sitting still, only under load because you won't get the same frequency and amplitude at that same RPM as you would under load. Pop up under the car with a rubber mallet and tap stuff to see if anything's loose.

wow. That makes waaaay more sense. So much so that I didn't think about it. Especially considering how I drove into a 1 foot puddle on the freeway at 60mph. Something probably got knocked loose.
