trans/fuel problem

i just bought an 88 t2 and my transmission is grinding in everygear, you can feel it in the shifter whle driving and when i shift or downshift it grinds and when ever i try to start my car it rotates but doesnt turn over, and there is a strong gas smell and i cant find the leak. there is no stains on the ground so i think its just a pin hole sum where and i think my fuel pump is shot cuz it doesnt make any noise when i turn the car on. sum1 please help me.

OK, does the car run right now? If it does, the fuel pump is probably still running. If there is a strong gas smell, it is probably the FPD(fuel pulse dampener) which is on the end of the primary fuel rail. Or, it could be a cut, or holed fuel supply line leading to, or from the primary. If it's not the FPD, then it is a pinhole leak in the little flexible hose under the turbo and intake manifold. It is hard to get to. I was with a guy who just bought a T2, and while we shot the breeze, I helped him take off the hood, and then just watched him take off the airbox. One of the reasons that his was not running properly was an air leak at the AFS. the duct had been cracked and air was leaking in. Also, he had a pinhole leak in the flexible supply line from the rigid supply line to the primary fuel rail. While his FPD was not bad, he had another one from another car there just in case. It is possible that your fuel pump is shot, but not if you are driving the vehicle. You need to get that gas leak taken care of quickly, or you will be having a barbeque soon, with your RX as the guest of honor. It is not going to get better. I would suggest you get one of the Haynes manuals to do some basic troubleshooting on your problem. The fuel rail is hard to get to, but I saw it done in less than 45 minutes, but the guy was a genius when it came to wrenching.

you could take the fuel pump out, and put 12 volts to it and see if it works, easy way to check

Don't lose site of the most important thing here, which is your fuel leak. I have been reading up on the Pulsation Dampener and it's not something to be ignored (as is any type of fuel leak). I have seen posts here from people who watched their 7's go up in smoke. I don't want it to happen to ours for sure and certainly not yours.

About your tranny. Refer to Haynes manual page 44, section 17 to check the level of lubricant. If that checks out you could have bad synchro's. That's our problem, a second gear synchro. It manifests itself by making it hard to downshift from third unless we really bring the rpm's down. We're going to have the tranny rebuilt. The car is going to be used for auto-x and we can't have shifting problems.
