Tranny refill plug rounded off and maybe crossthreaded, HELP!

It's rounded off all the way around and I think the reason it wouldn't come off is because it is cross threaded. I need to get that thing out today and refill the tranny fluid so I can drive my car. It's an 88 NA. If anyone knows any tricks on how to refill it or to get the bolt outta there that'd be awesome.

that sux *****......I took a towel....made a tight seal....then bought a pump inserted it through the drain hole and pumped away........now that i think about it I might not have had enough fluid in there which is what caused the tranny to fail......good luck.

Man, that really sucks. Mine wasn't in all the way when I replaced my fluids and still wno't thread all the way in, but it hasn't caused problems or really leaked yet (hard to check though).

There's alot of different ways to get it out. When I had the problem with my brakes I used a dremel tool and metal cutting wheel to cut new "sides" into the bolt and then took a socket that was close to the right size, but slightly smaller and pounded it in, then used my ratchet to back it out. It worked pretty well but destroyed the socket. Sockets are cheap though, so it's a possibility.

On another note, how do you guys check your tranny fluid? I don't see how you can do it on a level surface without a lift since it's difficult to fit under the car.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to get the bolt out? It's not just gonna pop out by itself. =P

Its kind of a hindsight issue now, but you should always remove the fill plug first, then the drain plug. If the fill plug is dicked up, then at least there is fluid in the tranny so you can drive the car somewhere to get the plug checked up.

Also, you have to be able to recognize when there is something wrong with a bolt or plug or something prior to rounding it off and screwing it all up. I don't know how many times I've seen bolts broken off in holes, or the heads are screwed up because someone didn't know when to stop.

Have you tried a BIG pair of vise-grips yet, and maybe a soft-faced mallet to "help" them along? The threads are so coarse on that plug, it would take a complete moron to cross-thread it...

If you have room, you could also drill a hole through it sufficiently sized to shove a screwdriver shank in there for some "twisting" leverage (and maybe a hammer to help that one along, as well, lol). If you have some thread penetrant on you, soak that sucker down before you do anything...
