It shifts like butter until the car starts warming up. Then I can barely get into 2nd, totally forget about 3rd. Any ideas what gives? 87 NA Sport

low gear oil, or wrong grade gear oil. It should be 85W90 for use in Ohio.

if you find out its not your gear oil. your pilot bearing is on its way out.

Change the fluid first, since it's less work, and it'll be a good thing if you have no idea when the last time it was serviced.

Also, check your clutch hydraulics to make sure it's disengaging the pressure plate properly.

Can I replace just the pilot bearing or do I have to replace more than that? I think its gone, that or something with the hydrolics. I'll try and switch to redline syn gear oil, i put mobil1 in there but i heard redline is god, we'll see. How much are pilot bearings?

Replacing the pilot bearing is going to require you to pull the transmission...

I am pretty sure it will. However, it may be better to search and download the FSM or the portion of the FSM you need as it is more detailed.

If you have some miles on the clutch and decide to pull the transmission, you should consider a complete clutch kit and not just the pilot.

Bleed/flush the hydraulics and change the gear oil. Also, inspect the shifter bushings. If that doesn't help, pull the tranny.

A temperature related issue, in my opinion, is a mechanical problem. Something is expanding and binding when warmed up. If you're lucky, its not something major. But, depending on tranny mileage, maintenance history, and driving style, you might need a rebuild.

Definitely download the FSM chapter for your transmission and clutch.

Im going to put a T2 tranny in within the next year. Im just pissed because i paid 3500 for this thing with a "new clutch" and i didn't notice this bullshit when i test drove it because i didn't really warm it all the way. 68k miles and the last guy who had it was some old chump. Im guessing half-*** clutch job.
