TPS internals... resistor?
My TPS is wacky... reads 1 kOhm at idle and jumps to 3.5kOhms at about 1/4 throttle. It stays there all the way to WOT.
The car cuts out like it hit a wall at ~6700rpms.
Before I fork out $170US for a new one, has anyone managed to take one apart and replace the resistor (or whatever the hell it is) inside?

I believe that they are sealed
You don't mention what year your car is, but from the name I'll assume it's an 88? Have you done a TPS adjustment...
What about a used TPS from the junker?

yeah sorry... 88 anniversary
I did the adjustment and set it to 1kOhm at idle.
I will look for a used one (no RX-7's in junkyards locally)... but it performs a simple task. It is basically just a resistor and I don't think it is worth the asking price. I'm sure it can be replaced by $5 worth of parts at radioshack...

Do you know what a variable resistor/potentiometer is?
It's usually a sweep arm on a long carbon trace.  The reason it goes bad is because this carbon trace gets all messed.
Sure, you can fudge something up from Radio Shack...
Does the RS unit handle the head on the engine?  I doubt it.
Does the RS unit handle the vibrations on the engine?  I doubt it.
The two biggest enemies of electronics is heat and vibration.
This is the reason why automotive electronics costs so much.
