Towing with an FC
I've found an engine I'm gonna buy, and its located two states away. I looked up quotes for shipping it freight and the prices were crazy. So i've decided that I'm just gonna go pick it up myself. It's a complete longblock motor. I could probabily fit it in the fc, but I dont really want to get my car dirty because its pretty mint.
So this brings me down to my question. My FC has a trailer hitch, so I was thinking of renting one of those small open uhaul trailers and hauling the motor back. Heres a picture of one of the trailers that I would be using
Anyway, What I'm asking is, Do you think it'l be safe for my Rx7 to pull that with a longblock motor in it? I have a hitch, so thats not a problem. But im worried about if it has the towing power.

what size hitch is it? i belive the gross max weight on the rx7 rear axel is around 1000lbs( check your door jam) , a tiny trailor with a long block in it should remain under that., call uhaul and ask what there small size trailors weighs. i think a long block is about 350 lbs
as for power yes it should tow it allright i drove 100 mi with a long block trany and a dismanteled engine hoist in my FC,
as long as everythings in good running order, for example like your brakes and clutch.

Yeah, I checked that already, and according to them it's an "Acceptable" setup, but I'm not so sure, just wanted to double check by getting everyone's information here first.

I know It was with a different trailer, but still, I was just making sure my GXL could handle it.

+1 for the tarp solution. Take out the passenger seat, Bring along some 2x4 sections and some misc lumber and hope the guy has an engine hoist. When you get it, Put the 2x4 chunks so your seat supports don't get dented in.. make sure and wrap the entire engine with tarp, and put some wood between the engine and your dash... and the engine and your bins.... Just don't get into an accident or you'll have 350lbs flying around.

It will fit in the hatch just fine, or you can remove the passenger seat. I haul engines like this all the time. Just get some old blankets, a tarp, and some tie-downs and you'll be fine.

i dont think the engine is really 350?
i think its less than that since i can carry the engine by itself around...
getting a trailer to haul that would be overkill...

Uhh.. If you got into an accident, you'd have to have HUGE tiedowns and major anchor points to hold an engine back... In a truck you have layers of steel between you and the bed... if it hit the glass, yes... you would get killed. The inertia of a 200-300lb chunk of metal is a LOT.... Even seatbelts have a hard time holding people in cars... and they are super flat and have re-enforced anchor points. I'm not saying its not possible to anchor an engine in securely enough... I'm just saying that if something DID snap... an engine hitting you would be quite destructive.
Enough of that.

It's come to my attention that I don't know the exact differences between a wankel longblock and shortblock... hmmm...
Anyways, if you're going to be towing heavy stuff, remember that you're towing heavy stuff!
Leave extra room for stopping and take it easy from dead stops so you don't burn your clutch (Too bad cars don't have a Lo-Lo :p). Not that it's too much extra weight, but you want to be safe right?
If you do decide to go with a trailer, remember you have a trailer on your car. I once saw a guy take a sharp turn with his pickup in a parking lot and he ran his trailer halfway up a lamp-post before it flipped over.
Ubuntu FTW.

I've been thinking of brining it up but there was just never a good time to post :p
Matter of fact, a coworker of mine just got Ubuntu up and running through VMServer here at work. We were playing with that for the better part of a day.
Unix for humans indeed.
I love the fact it kind of looks like a rotor.
Gives me an idea for some image editing when I get home
