Torque Converter bolts

As you know im in the middle of auto tranny swap. In removing the old trans, do I need to first remove the torque converter bolts? It seems like a pain to do. Sorry for my niav...ity... yeah... um, is the flywheel bolted to the torque converter, or is the torque converter bolted to the trans? If its bolted to the trans, and nothing else, I should be able to drop the trans w/o removing the torque converter first, correct?

thanks.

And I will be needing to remove the torque converter at some point as the replacement trans did not come /w one. Is their a special tool? Thanks!
