Torque Converter!!!

Torque Converter!!!
Just one last question everyone before I take my engine out. I have both an 87 base, and 88 GXL, I am currently switching the engines, I was wondering is it possible, to leave the torque converter on the engine or is it necessary to take it off, I can not get the bolts off for the torque converter.
