TOP speed for FC?

well i've got a 1986 NA FC with a 1987 engine, i forgot what year my tranny came from, but however, i got my car up to 140, and that was in 4th gear. is my car speed governed? i'm redlining the car in 4th around somewhere passed 7000rpm, and when i shift to 5th gear, i lose speed...and i heard of some people topping out over 150 in their FC...any help would be greatly appreciated...arjay

No governor. You need more power to go any faster.

Top speed is a factor of HP and drag coefficient. Get better aerodynamics or more HP.

5th gear is a crusing gear for a N/A FC. You wouldn't have got up to 140 in 5th gear, it is too wide.

The S4 N/A was rated at 137MPH top speed. A turbo2 can hit closer to 150. An FC has a very low c/d (ranging from .29 to .33 depending on trim, spoilers, etc..) but just lacks power to move much faster. With an N/A, even fairly well modded, you will be lucky to see 145-150. A turbo2 when modded on the other hand , you'll probably run out of *****/road before you reach its top speed.
And 13B power is correct, there is no governer, and top speed is reached in 4th in your N/A. 5th is strictly a tall overdrive, used to cruising and gas milage purposes.

i hit 142 MPH (indicated) in my TII with plenty of juice. However the lack of road, and ***** on my part pushed me to lift off the throttle. I wonder how fast i was really going. Enough to get arrested, is all i know.

I'm sorry... but this just begs the question...

...WHY?

Is there some reason you're going this fast, or (I hate to stereotype) are you just a high school kid wanting to get scraped off a tree somewhere?

I do say that tongue in cheek, as I pushed my GTP up above 150 just to see if it could once... but it is a drag car... and I was on an abandoned 6 mile 4 lane wide asphalt lot....

There's something about being able to do 140mph which is awesome.

I only do it on the Highways at like 3 in the morning when they're dead.
The max speed I hit was about 135MPH in my 88GTU.

You must have went right to the end of the tach to hit 140 in 4th. At 7k I would hit about 120 in 4th in both my SE and GTU. Or your engine is ported or something.

Sure there are reasons to need know just how fast your car is. Like for example if your going 110 and spot a cop you need to know how much faster you can get to to be able to out run it. Id go for anything above 150mph.

Your car will only go as fast as your highest RPM compared to your gear ratio. If you want to go faster, get different gears and more power. There are gears sold by some I remember seeing to gear the N/A tranny to 196mph in 5th.

The N/A tranny is already geared high enough. With a 5-speed with 4.10 rear end, 5th gear at 7500 RPM is 181MPH. If you have a 3.90 rear end (automatic rear end) 5th gear at 7500 RPM is 191MPH. But as I stated before, a N/A just does not have enough power to push the car this far, nor will even a heavily modded turbo.

Actually, if youd want to go faster there is no need to get taller gears since the factory 5th is crazy tall, tops out around 175mph. Actually shorter final drive will give you a higher top speed more than likely because you'll be at a higher rpm for each given speed.

I got no where near the redline in 5th at 135. If I had more power or better aerodynamics then I could pull farther.

I'm too terrified to death to go anymore than 10 over the speed limit. I already got a ticket in my cutlass and my dad told me if I get one moving violation he'll put the 10AE up for sale.. Couldn't bear to see that.

Thats why you buy your own car, so if you get in trouble they cant take it away. I mostly only speed alot on highways that I know, that is I know there arent cops.

If you guys want to go that fast on public roads/highways do us all a favor, buy a motorcycle and do it ... the rush is beter, and that way when you **** up, the only person you will kill is yourself.

Leave the innocents out of this.

Bingo... The car is in my dad's name until I turn 18... then it's mine, and so is the insurance bill.

Totally unrelated and probalby covered but please, please, please do not modify that car. It's certainly a piece of history and I know the temptations to make things go faster. Yes I'm throwing rocks from a glass house, but your far is MUCH nicer than mine ever was in factory origional condition.

Sorry, I just had to say that

As for top speed, I did 135 indicated in my 88 TII many year ago. I haven't come close since then. It's just not worth getting caught for something like that on a public road to me.

Guys, please be careful...I know its fun and a thrill doing top speed runs, but at that speed anything can happen and most of them are very, very bad!

I was a passenger in a clients 95 Corvette, he was trying to show off amd only proved he couldn't drive...He nearly killed me and totaled his like new 8k miles Vette...

He lost control and we slid through a telephone pole doing maybe 55 MPH...On the PASSENGERS side...My head was smashed into the side pillar, where seatbelts had NO EFFECT! Blood came drenching down my face...I was lucky to just get a cuncusion...3 months later I finally feel almost like my old self...

Have fun, but becareful! Iits not worth wrecking your car or getting hurt or killed...

I try to avoid going in excess of 100 MPH.And i ride my motorcycle alot more apeshit than my 7. You live in a desert **** hole where there are roads you can drive on for days without seeing people. I live in california where there is a single city with a larger population than most countries. Whole nother ball game, people get killed out here driving like dipshits on an Hourly basis.
