Tips on installing motor?

wasup guys,

i plan on re-installing my motor within the next couple days back into my t2.. any tips you can give to make my life more easier? this is my first RWD motor transplant, my main concern is lining up the input shaft with the clutch. that seems like something that would have me stuck for hrs. on. btw the tranny is already in..any advice would be appreciated.

thanks,
AL

Few things -

First, put the motor mounts in the car itself, and have the motor mount brackets (the part that directly bolts to the engine) attached to the engine. This makes it a LOT easier to get 'em on the mounts. When you put the mounts in the car, loosely put the nuts on from the bottom that hold it in place - this will keep the motor mount in position, but let you move it around to line it up with the brackets when the time comes.

Put a floor jack under the bellhousing of the tranny and get it up in the air - that makes it a lot easier to line up, and makes it easy to move the tranny up and down to help line it up.

Get the motor mated with the tranny first, then bring it down onto the motor mounts.

Also, have a buddy help through the whole process, and GO SLOW. It's REAL easy to put the motor down on someone's finger or the like - just take your time.

I've installed countless motors, and each one goes in differently. I had one that was literally in the car in under a minute - it lined up perfectly with the tranny and motor mounts the first time, and dropped right in. I've had others I fought for 2 hours before they finally went in.

If you've done a front wheel drive motor, this is WAY easier - I helped put a Taurus V6 in once, and that was a ROYAL pain - FWD motor mounts are so bizzare!

Hope this helps!
Dale

You might consider pulling the transmission and attaching it to the engine before installation. I found it much easier to mate the two outside the car.
