Timing questions

I asked this before, but nobody answered my question. I tried to put a timing light on my 87, but couldn't find the marks. I found the nicks in the pulley and painted them red. I still couldn't see them so I painted them white. Thought I'm getting older and maybe the eye sight was going. Still no marks showed up! The car runs great, but I wanted to make sure it was running at it's best. My question is this...Is it possible for this type of engine to run at 120 degrees advance or retard? If the engine is running good now should I try to fix it if it is out like that? Help me out guys! I'm not a mechanic and really new to rotary engines.

Side note here about how the engine performs as it is...I put 14 gallons in the tank, ran it dry and filled it to the top. I put on 371 miles before I ran it dry again. That's 26.5 miles to the gallon. Not bad! Maybe I should just forget the tune up!

Tips:

I have found that placing the timing light near the spark plug works better (for whatever reason).

I have also found that the stock ECU makes a much weaker spark than the Haltech, so it tends to light the timing light on the off stroke (remember that the leading plugs are wasted spark).

I usually tested my timing on the #1 trailing plug.

26.5 MPG is pretty good, I think that your timing is a little advanced from stock to get that. Extra timing advance does not hurt anything (as long as you don't have to pass emissions), NA rotaries are very pre-ignition/spark knock resistant.

The best my stock ECU would do in the '86 was 31.5 MPG, driving 70-80 MPH. This was with no air pump, no power steering, no A/C, 15 degree advanced timing and a feather light right foot.

I wish that now (with Haltech installed) I could keep my foot out of it long enough to get much more than 30 MPG. The Haltech runs at 16:1 AFR in an effort to improve fuel economy (except for WOT -> 12.8:1).

line up your pulley with the timing mark and restab it.

its possible for the engine to run at an 180 degree offset of timing since the leadings fire at the same time for the rotors. it is possible. ive done it by accident.
