Check out this link - http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/oring.htm
This should help explain whats going on in there. Also be sure to check out this link so that you don't really screw up badly -
http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/pulley.htm

I changed out my front cover and didn't need any gaskets - just some RTV.
Be careful you don't screw it up. I didn't have to pull the oil pan. The front pully bolt is hard to get loose sometimes. you might be able to hold the flywheel through clutch inspection port - I don't know - mine was out of the car when I did it. I also heard it's possible to just turn the engne over with a breaker bar on the front pully nut, but I haven't tried it. I think I used a 6 point impact socket that was 7/8ths to get the bolt out. Thats about all I can think of at the moment. Rotary Resurrection site has some good info.

You prob don't need a rebuild. Some parts I can think of are....

RTV. I used Hondabond
Oil O-ring for front cover(do you have an early cover or late?)
Waterpump gasket(New waterpump while your there???)
Oil pan gasket
Replace thermopellet (cheap)

I think the main bolt on the front cover is 22mm. I used a small propane torch and an air comp and it came right off.

Parts should be around 100-150 depending on if you replace the waterpump. Most of all this is a lot of labor.

Shouldn't take more than a few hours. Gaskets are cheap. The biggest part is probably going to be getting the mail pulley bolt off. Once thats off it should be a breeze. I believe I used a breaker bar and left my car in first gear ,although in hindsight that probably wasn't a great idea.

A right size socket on a breakover bar. The breakover lays against the left fender area or the aircompressor. Key to START for but a moment. Bolt can now be removed with your fingers. The starter acts as a very cheap impact wrench. Car OUT of gear. EGI fuse pulled.
