Timing

Hello all I'm going to perform some basic tune ups on my 88 gxl. My question- How do I check the timing? I realize I need a timing light. Are they expensive? Is it worth just taking the car into a mechanic? What are the procedures for checking if It is a simple task? thanks in advance----Ren

I would buy a timing light. Checking your timing is painfully easy..

All you have to do is hook the timing light to L1 plug wire, and aim it at the balancer. Make sure the mark lines up.

I would say anout $30 for a light vs. $75 for a mechanics visit.

You decide.

don't look into the barrel of the gun! you can be hypnotized for hours be the flashing light, only saved when the motor shuts off from lack of fuel.

really its not the hard and you can get a gun cheaper then 30. it doesn't need to be fancy.
