Arrow timing

After putting a different engine in my car( my car-87 non turbo m/t , 88 engine with 48k on it in there now ) does the timing need to be set for the car to stay running. It starts, goes up to 3500 then back down to 2000 then shuts off, afm is plugged in and am using the cars(87) wiring harness, have tried both harnesses and same result. do the TPS and BAC need reset....and how

NO, your car would not start at all if the timing was off that bad, it sounds like your car has other issues.
