Question TII Turbo -- J-Spec has Play!

I just received my series 5 J-Spec motor, which came with the turbo. I stuck my finger on the shaft, and if you push it side to side it will slowly move back / forth (1 millimeter? ). Is this rebuild time? If so, what does this normally cost?

I wouldn't mind blowing this turbo up ... Just as long as it doesn't take out my engine with it when it goes.

Thanks!

Take the IC off and check it for alot of oil too... If there is a crapload in there (more than a few ounces) then you may have a oil seal bad on the turbo and its warped something.

Have fun with the harness that thing is a bitch .. LOL

Exclamation DOH!

damn damn damn!!! Not what I wanted to hear about the harness BuddyRX-7! I take it you've done (doing?) this swap?

Any hints on the wiring (FSM?, turbo or N/A?)

Thanks for the turbo info guys! When a turbo gets too loose, what happens, do they go BANG! and throw bits of metal down the intake? :-)

Thanks!,
Manolis

Check for axial play (front to back) - there should be zero, play here is bad and means rebuild time. Side to side is ok (the bearing is designed to 'float') although I don't know how much is too much except that if you can force the inducer to hit the side then its too much. My 87 turbo has about 1mm side-side and still boosts 7psi without oil leakage.
