TII transmission, pops into 2nd too far

Well on my 87 Turbo II. When I shift into 2nd, the shifter really easily goes into 2nd (slight resistance then pops into gear) but sometimes gives slight resist again and and goes REALLY far backward a 2nd time. It happens when I shift quickly. When I shift out of 2nd, it pops out of this far back spot, then out of 2nd (drives in 2nd the whole time). Is something wrong? Is there anything dangerous that might come from this?

ALSO: it can be pushed into the really far back position without the clutch and taken out without the clutch. 2nd is the only gear that does it.

have you pulled out your shifter. You should just pull it out and have a look at it. Also take a look at where it goes in, you kknow the little hole, and see if there's something wrong, check your shifter bushings and stuff. Thats all i can think of and if it drives fine and doesnt make any noise then there probably isnt anything wrong with it, just dont push it all the way back.

I was told I need new bushings. Member SabOwner (name on this site) was at an autocross and he said he "sat in my car and played with the shifter" he said I'd want new bushings. I figured they were for comfort reasons but if they are really needed I'll look into some.
