TII Start-up: First time in 3 years

Ok, the project progresses:

We fixed the fuel injector wiring:
https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/88-tii-fuel-injector-test-633941/

We correctly routed the coolant lines:

No starty. To recap, the car was failed project that I bought. The po had replaced with a jspec and had never gotten it to run.

I have compression, spark and fuel. I also have a fuel pump cut-off switch. I could not get the car to start. It would smoke and pop but would not light off. I tried the deflooding proceedure a couple of times to no avail.

So I drained the gas tank. What did I do with the 16+ gal I got from the TII? I put it in my Ford Van tow vehicle. That van would barely run on the old gas. Nasty, bad idea.

I put in 5 gal of new 93 octane gas it the TII. I got much more action, but still no start.

So, I had my wife tow start me. The motor was very reluctant to stay running. I could not get it to remain running until the second lap around my neighborhood, about 1-1/2 miles. It finally stayed running, idleing about 1500-2000 rpm.

After shut off, I again could not start the car. I think there are some vacuum leaks, even a couple of small hoses that are still looking for a home. Would this make the engine hard to start?

Vacuum hoses off= hard to start+ high idle?

After driving it around the neighborhood, the temperature bagan to edge up to the top of the guage; there is no belly pan and also no shroud on the engine driven fan. Would it be normal to get hot fast on an 80* day with no shroud?

No fan shroud= high temp?

I drove the car another lap around the neighborhood, but there is an oil leak on the passenger side of the engine, lots of oil smoke.

Oil leak on passenger side= turbo oil line?

Could this be anything but the turbo oil line?

Thanks in advance.

BTW, the car drove great, tight steering, firm brakes. When I get it sorted, it will be a nice car. :D

have you changed the fuel filter? Fuel lines? When I first started my monte after a while it wouldn't. The gas was bad I had to do an overhaul of plus, lines, filter after I drained and added new gas. It ran ok after that with some smoke.

I am not 100% sure it is those but it worked on my other car. Hope that helps at all.

Update= Trouble

Ok, I have an update. The car is running great, but Houston, I have a problem.

There is a BIG oil leak at the top of the sealing surface between the front iron and the front rotor housing on the driver side near the top of the engine. It doesn't leak until the engine warms up, then it leaks a steady stream. I tried to take pictures, but there was not sufficient access. It leaked a stream running down the driveway longer than the car while I was looking for vacuum leaks. Maybe a half quart of oil in 20 minutes.

Any suggestions or thoughts?

thanks!

Grab the factory service manual (read the FAQs) and check what seal that is. Good luck!

Yeah thanks, I would never have thought about the FSM. :)

No really, I can quite easily see the seals in the diagrams in the FSM. Sometimes the diagrams help. In this case they are not self-explanatory to me. If they were, I wouldn't have asked. Have you had a rotary apart? I have not. If you have, you can tell me if the dowel pin is the oil galley from the front of the engine to the rear? That would make sense, because they are hollow and they are 0-ringed. That could be a source of the oil leak. If it is not, I need some help from someone experience in the rotary internals.

FYI, it is an S5 block, reputed to be a JSPEC and not rebuilt.

I am asking for a little help from your experience, if you have it.

Thanks
