Some US oil companies post a higher octane rating for their pump gas when sold at higher altitudes. They do this because the octane (anti-knock) requirement for an engine decreases with altitude. It's just re-labled.

And mine is the front of the car. The chalk board says "Class is cancelled". And, of course, there is a trooper there for the right effect.

I looked at the vote results and 7% use regular. I guess there are a lot of gamblers out there.

No, it means that there aren't very many people with somewhat stock S4 cars who know their [gas] from a hole in the ground. The higher-octane users either have S5's (89 octane min), lots of mods, lots of hot spots, poor tuning, or are just plain stupid. I'm hoping that it's lots of mods.

Just to reassure Evil that its mods and not stupidity

As I said in my first post here, I generally use the 96 Oct Shell's V-Power, or the SuperPlus unleaded (96 or 98 Oct) if I cannt find Shell.

HOWEVER, after getting my rebuilt turbo and hitting 0,8-0,9 bar, I thought about detonation and fuel-cut, at least until I can get the new reprogrammed ECU. I cannt really do anything about the latter (fuel-cut) right now, so I just filled up the Rex with Shell's 99+ Racing, in order to be safe.

Now, I dont have an A/F meter, but although the temperature was close to 35 degrees Celcius, and I was normally boosting 0,7 (didnt WOT at any gear, thank you very much), I didnt get anything else but fuel-cut in fifth. Not even a teeny weeny little "ping"

Sure hope I can get that ECU fast though....99+ Racing is expensive, and I want to actually be able to pay for the FD pump, injectors and ECU

I could have sworn that there is a sticker visible when you have the gas cap open that says to use 91+ octane gas. I know it was on the 87TII that I used to do my TII Convertible conversion, because remember using regular in the vert and premium in the TII.

The S4 cars were rated for 87 PON (USA) which is about the same as 91 RON (other countries). You either had a non-US donor car, or someone put an aftermarket sticker on their RX-7 before it was sold to you.

I agree with it depends on your mods, But the turbo will never hate you for providing higher octane to it. The manual does state it.

I run 100 octain ave gas most of the time!

But 91 with 10% toluene is pretty good also.

I love the way low lead gas smells! and the white exhaust tip.

I use 93 with 2 stroke mx oil. Works great keeps the fuel system lubed. apex seals etc. After every 2 fill ups I use a 104 booster (off road) and once a month 112 from the race track here in town. Higher octain helps with all the knock and ping. I dont have much and dont want it.
