Throttle stuck at 4k RPM??

Like the title said, I cranked my rebuild for the first time today and it held its idle at 4k rpm? After about 10-15 seconds it didn't drop down, so I got nervous and I shut it off and didn't try and start it again. If anything it should rev up to 3k and start declining, no?

Now I'm on here trying to do some research. I came across threads talking about throttle linkages and adjust set screw's or the like, but I have no clue what they're talking about. And also adjusting the throttle cable. I know the throttle cable is out of adjustment but I'm not sure how to set it with those nuts on the cable. Is there an dummy guideline for someone like myself?

Like a set order of things would really help out. Like throttle then BAC then whatever.

Any help is appreciated!

sorry i read that wrong, i thought you were saying it wouldn't rev past 4K

you should take a look at your idle adjustment screw. It open your throttle if the screw is all the way in it could be holding your throttle open.

This adjustment is at the throttle body.

If that isn't it make sure your throttle cable isn't pulled back so far it isn't pulling the throttle open.

I think you just put it on too tight. Adjust it right and you should be good to go. I did the same thing after putting my emissions on. Revved up to 3k and thought "cool the aws is working now" but it stayed at 3k for days. Finally had to adjust the throttle cable and it went back down to where it was supposed to be.

Is your throttle cable connected properly?

I don't even remember playing with those screws, but hey, I'll give it a shot.

I honestly don't know how to connect it properly. I've been reading the FSM and I've read it over and over, but I don't think I'm doing it right. How do I check for its slack. The 1-3 mm indicated in the FSM I believe?

When I have more time tomorrow, I'll try and post up a video I took on the attempted afore mentioned.

I'll try to adjust it tomorrow when I have time. And you never posted your pics for how your buffing went on your hood. Come on Rob, stop holding out and put out already!!

Just loosen the nut furthest to the driver side, and let the cable relax a little. Then tighten it up in it's new position. You'll need two 12mm wrenches.

This is somewhat of an old thread, but it's still relating to the main issue, so I saw no point in making a new thread. Now, onto the actual problem!

My Tach isn't showing anything. Does not move what so ever while the car is running. While its running, I can hear the rpm's are sort of high. What could it be? A fuse in the kick panel? I read either in the FSM or here that fouled trailing plugs could mess with the tach. Is that true? If so, they're brand new. I don't see how they could have fouled out this fast? Any help is appreciated!

Has the ECU been unplugged recently? If the cluster plug isn't pressed all the way in, the tach won't move from 0 RPM.

All plugs at the ECU are in securely.

Plus, the tach was working a while ago. That's how I know it was hitting 4k rpm's in the first place.

I would check the plugs under the trailing coil that connect to it. There is a yellow and blue wire and a blue and yellow wire. Cant remember which is which but one goes to the tach and one sends rpm signal to the ecu.

I am most definitely sure that its the timing now.

I've read a few threads about TDC and am now disappointed that I didn't mark the pulley's when I took them off.

I've read a few threads like HAILERS on how to get TDC approximately, so I've got my fingers crossed that I've figured it out. We shall see!!

So as of right now, the tach is working again, but I still have an idle of about 35-3900 rpms. I've tried adjusting from the BAC and nothing worked. I'm not even sure if I did it right, but even if I did, the idle didn't drop??

Could it be a giant vacuum leak?
