Thinking of buying this 1988 RX-7

Hey, I'm new here and I need a 2nd car so I there is a red 1988 RX-7 Conver. for sale on my block. The body has 126,000 miles on it but he put a new motor in it 60,000 miles on that. It needs a paint job and a new top. He said it's mine for 1000 bucks. Good deal? I'm planing on using it for work and driving it everynow and then on new days. Would this car give me lots of problems? How is it on gas? And insurance?

Thanks for your help.

If the body is straight, go for it.
Gas is about like any other sports car... 17-25mpg
Ask him why the new motor was put in, though, and how often he changed the oil, and how it was broken in.
Insurance shouldn't be too bad.
Problems are just like any car that age.
I have an 88 as well, but mine isn't a ragtop.

Well it wasn't a brand new one it had like 68,000k on it when he got it. He needed to change it cause during a nasty storm down here a tree when right thru the hood and kill the motor. The body is perfect. And he never drives it anymore it's been sitting there for awhile coverd up. he take it out tiwce a month he said.

If you can afford it... true duals.

If not, I have a stock header, bonez cat, magnaflow mufflers with pre-silencers, and it sounds great. Not raspy at all, stays very low toned from idle to 7K.

Good luck with the car!
Post pics when you get her!

I don't think it breaks a lot if it is well maintained. Because of its age there are always chances something will go wrong.... I drive my 88 vert every day. I still have minor issues but it basically runs great

Depending on where you live a vert is not the best daily driver, not because it's a RX-7 but because its a vert. Tops can leak and be cut into, poor visability with the top up are 2 gripes.

Some vert specific parts are expensive and/or hard to find.

Beyond that check it out like any other RX-7.

i say get it. it sounds like a hell of a deal. i picked mine up for 1100 here in wa. insurance should be cheap. i pay only 75 a month for liability. full coverage is like 125. so i will get full coverage here soon. moneys tight right now. but hey whens it not. i say pick it up and have fun with it.

I agree with PMR2000. I have an 88 vert that I bought from a guy in florida. The vert can have some quarky problems, so can all the RXs. Its like the turbos, the more there is, the more there is to go wrong. Its not inherintly bad or problematic but look at the age of the car. Do YOU know how moody 16 year olds are?!?!? This car is the same. Just have a backup car and maybe join AAA and get a cellphone. Then your covered. But if you keep it in good shape and don't ignore the warning signs, I think you'll be happy with her performance.

P.S. The top is costly to replace ($700 avg) but I love convertables enough to just deal with it.
