thinking about buying a t2

like topic says.. i found a few problems while checking it out;
- when putting it into 2nd gear, it grinds just a bit.. almost as if u were to not depress the clutch when shifting
- idle seems a bit rough, but a couple freinds of mine say its normal.. im not sure.

anyway, thanks guys.. appreciate it.. i know im just a noob

2nd gear grinding is sort of common in 88's. I believe its the syncroes in the transmission wearing out and is a sign that you might need a new transmission soon
The idle is also extremly common in TII's but it should not be overlooked. It must be fixed and you should defetly get him to lower the price of the car to compensate. If he says its not a big deal have him fix it before he sells it to you.

I have an 87 TII, and have the same problem with my 2nd gear, and my car only has 62,000 miles on it. I read that it's a common problem. Definately no need to buy a new transmisison for it though. If anything you'd probably just need to have the 1st and 2nd gear synchros replaced... I only mention first as well because you use it the most, so it would probably be the next one to go out. It's usually not much of a problem for me, except when downshifting. But I found that I can sort of push the shifter into 1st a little bit, and then it will slip into 2nd okay. Anywho, having any part of the transmission rebuilt can get expensive, especially if you would have the shop remove your transmission, rather than doing it yourself. So that's definately something to consider.

Mine idles a bit rough as well. It has ever since we got it running. That was a few months back when we rebuilt the engine... I haven't got that problem sorted out yet either, but it seems that there is many possible causes for it. I'll let you know if I get mine sorted out first.

Tuneups, TPS replacement. Either way, take it to the Mazda dealeship and pull the compression numbers. They should use the ROTARY compression tester and you should get 6 numbers back.
