thermostat
what are the consequenses of driving my car without a thermostat. i had to remove mine due to high speed overheating and i dont have the money to replace it till next week. but like i said need to know the consequenses of it . i know the heater might not work well but i dont mind that to much scince i live in houston hehe . whats else????:p
Well, since you are asking, I'm assuming that you didn't do it in the regular race fashion. What you will get is a messed up flow because of the bypass hole, and you will get less cooling efficiency because there is no longer a restriction in the system (your thermostat body is gone). I think that the only really bad thing that could happen is a cracked block if you do not let your car warm up when you first start it. BTW, the warm-up will take longer now.
Geez, if you don't even have the money for a thermostat, how do you eat?
Anyway, once your welfare check comes in, be sure to buy a Mazda brand thermostat, and install it with the "jiggle pin" up. Oh yeah, and don't over-tighten the thermostat housing bolts - they should be tightened to only 14-17 ft-lbs.

I took mine out just as an experiment two weeks ago. I've done it on several cars over the years. On the 87 N/A the idle stays closer to 1000 where as with the thermostat it warmed up and went to the 750 solid as a brick idle. I have a digital meter connected to the output of the tps and it measured 1.30 volts as I sat in the grocery parking lot an hour ago. Normal with the warmed up engine with a thermostat is 1.0 volts. Its reading high because the thermowax has not let the fast idle cam seperate. So I think it might effect the gas milage just a touch. Not real sure on that. I Texas we are having 100 degree days and won't have a freeze until maybe January. I do not recommend taking the thermostat out but at the same time don't see the bad side. I've run up to 7500 in forth yesterday and did not see any adverse effect. By the way, I'll give you a hundred bucks for the hood and throw in two thermostats. And a radiator cap?
