i'm posting this question here since it actually pretains to '86 and later. i'm looking into replacing the thermal pellet in the e-shaft and i'm wondering which one u guys r using. the one racingbeat offers is different than that of atkins and mazdatrix. besides the obvious, what's the difference and will either work? why can't i just remove the small spring and washer that's obviously missing from the replacements?
Racing Beat: $8.75

Atkins: $10.50
Mazdatrix: $8.94

boy, u guys have certainly been alot of help. 19 views and pushed back to page 3. i got more response from the 1st gen guys within 8hrs of posting my question. what is it, my post count not low enough to warrent a response as a "noobie" question? maybe cause i've never posted here before? stumped? o well, thanx anyway.
If you just remove the spring and the washer from the stock thermal pellet, oil will be bypassing the rotors all of the time and the engine will soon be toast. You can make your own thermal pellet replacement with three 5/16" lockwashers on the stock thermal pellet. Here's a link to what you need to do:

me = $7.50 shipped unless you build a lot of motors... i can do a bulk discount.
i was tired of paying too much, so i had a machine shop whoop up a buttload for me. i'm just gonna sell off enough to pay for them all, then keep the rest handy. it'll be a good way to see how many motors i build in the next few months

Step by step instructions.
Check out the rest of Ted's site, too. There's a bunch of stuff that might interest you, if you're doing things like the e-shaft oil thermo bypass.

See that little 3mm hole in the pic you posted? That is the bleed hole. The RB and Atkins (and I'm sure guitarjunkies and Pineapple's method) block that hole so the rotor gets oil all the time.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but when the factory pellet is bypassing, it is just bypassing the oil jet. Right? I mean the rotor bearing is still getting oil pressure.
