Is there any way to have the same power with stock downpipe on T2?

I have put in that race downpipe in my t2, and car is fast and everything is ok, but it's too loud and it stinks more from exhaust, because there is no cats at all. I can't open a sunroof or window because of that damn smell, now is there any way to have the same power and hit 10psi on the stock downpipe, i removed the main coverter and have high flow catback. So if anyone knows any options please reply.

perforamnce cat. Be sure to hook up the air pump to the cat.

The stock DP is very restrictive, you don't want it. If your exhaust smells, your car's running way too rich. Find out why. If it's too loud you need better mufflers.

I had the exact same problem you described. When i went to a straight exhaust on my 89 T2, i had the aweful exhaust smell too and i didnt like the slightly tinny sound that i got. I have a racing beat downpipe, a big custom fit cat, and a greddy PE exhaust.

Buy a stainless cat that is 3" like your exhaust. I believe mine is a truck cat, but its stainless, 3" is high flow, and it cost $180 for the cat and to have and exhaust shop to weld on an extension and flanges to fit my downpipe and cat back exhaust. The muffler tone is better, and i only get the exhaust smell when the car is cold. The cat takes a bit to heat up, but once it does, the exhaust is squeaky clean, very low emmisions. I highly reccomend going the route i did, less expensive than other "hi flow" cats, plus 3" isnt very restrictive at all. Good luck

Graham

hi! sorry if this is a newbie question but i did a search and haven't come up with a definite answer. Will the downpipes like the ones offererd by Apexi and HKS fit on the stock turbo? or do those downpipes only work with an aftermarket turbo? thanks

I believe the downpipe just connects to the exaust manifold and not the turbo. You get another 1PSI of boost due to the downpipe providing less backpressure than the pre-catalytic converter.

hope this helps

Just be sure to get one rated for an NA or Turbo and the correct years.

Dude, you've got you bits all mixed up!
The manifold bolts to the engine. The turbo bolts to the manifold. The downpipe bolts to the turbo.
"Downpipe" is just a silly name for the first part of a turbo car's exhaust system that runs "down" from the turbo to underneath the car.

Never mind you guys, I decided to sell the pipe and i'll put the stock one back on. I'd rather run 8 psi and have clean smoke coming out of the exhaust rather than 10 psi with that stinky stuff. If anybody wants it email me.
It's 2.5 inch Racing Beat downpipe. it's still on my car, it will be off this saturday.

no no, you're doing it all wrong, keep the straight downpipe (goes from the turbo to under the car, stock one has a big lump in it for the cat, and a hole for the o2 sensor) and replace your MAIN cat with a bonez one from rx7.com... The high-flow main cat and straight downpipe combo with apex n1 exhaust on my t2 makes 10-11 lbs of boost most of the time.
