Depending on the year of your car, a functioning temp guage that's pegged above "H" is indicating either "extremely hot" or "surface of the sun hot"...in either case, when you opened the hood you'd have seen (or heard) something.

There would have been an obvious leak, you'd have heard the coolant bubbling like a kettle on a stove, the recovery tank would have been full or there would be a cloud of white smoke from the exhaust.

I assume that since you continued driving, nothing of this sort was observed.

Now that the car has cooled down, check the coolant level in the radiator.
If good, start the car (rad cap still off) and check for bubbles.
If no bubbling is present, it's possible that either the sending unit, the gauge or the wiring is messed up.

BTW, no one here is named "watup".

I agree ^. I would do all of the precautionary things like taking the rad cap off and checking for bubbles. If none, then see if the car spikes out right after you start it up. If so, then make sure the connector that goes onto the temperature sending unit is clipped on "all the way". If its not, then it would not read right thus spiking out all the way past H.

But clokker covered everything pretty well. If no dice there then check the temp sending unit.
