temp was -45, when i started my car after the car overheated..help

help guys, before i went to work the car was fine..
temp went below -40 to -45 and when I warmed up the car after my shift at work, the engine overheated on the way home..
no buffer that went off, and no heat air comming out the heater..

i opened the hood and i see the top rad hose beside the air housing was inflated..

would it be that my rad is clogged frozen due to maybe an improper coolant mixture?

help! : (

Yeah, you probably had too much water in the system. Once it warms up, drain out the system and use a higher percentage of antifreeze/coolant to water.

Romeo, Romeo...where for art thou Romeo?

No seriously, where in Canada? It got down to 15 below (its not "minus 15" its "15 below") here in Minneapolis over the weekend and I thought THAT was cold. And you drove home with no heat???

I once had a Chevette that froze solid in the winter and I just started it up in the spring and drove it like nothing happened. But that's just a Chevette...ahhhh, the 'vette. She was like my last girlfriend...nothing to look at, but she could get the job done.

If that's *C that's nothing, if it's *F that's not too shabby.

your coolant hoses should be firm when you squeeze them, if it was inflated you may have a bad hose, and if you had no heat allso, i would check your coolant level. make shure your car is cool, pop the radiator cap. the coolant should be up to the top of the radiator, if not, add some pre-mixed coolant to the radiator till it reaches the top. then put the cap back on and fill the overflow tank to the cold line. start the car and turn the heater on, let it warm up and keep an eye on the coolent level. it sounds to me like you have a bad hose/coolant leak and you have air pockets in your coolant system, that would explaine the lack of heat and the overheat on the gauge....its worth a shot to try it!!! let us know how it turns out!!!

Huh? -45 in Celsius or Fahrenheit is COLD! -45 Celsius is like -49 Fahrenheit... so the difference is just 4 degrees, give or take. EDIT: Or wait... -45 Fahrenheit is like -43 Celsius, so the difference is actually 6 degrees.

what do you mean..Once it heats up?..it did heat up and over heated..shuttin the car down was good..if you didn't damage the water pump impeller..I had an old beater and it overheated on me it was about 25 below 0 farenhiet)..the coolant was like ice and slush..I thought for sure the engine was toast..the heat from the engine melted the water in the coolant to let it flow half decent..I immediately took it in and changed it(saved her!)..sheer luck..As far as temperature conversion..O celcius is 32 farenhiet..(they couldn't leave the damn system alone..standard/metric...oh no..have to reprogram..lol)

Yeah I screwed that one up, I'm used to higher than 40*C (where F is still colder), I never remember the scale properly. Either way, it's fairly cold but so long as there ain't a lot of wind ya can manage!

The Water pump has gone bad or the Thermostat was stuck. My bet, is that the Water pump stopped circulating the water.

If it over heated and the top hose was only swollen then I think your top hose is ok. When mine did this same thing the top hose split open with a bang that lifted the hood and made me soil my trousers......

I tried to "just" replace the hosed but once I buttoned everything back up, the water pump was leaking from the weep hole. Once the water pump was replaced everything has been great.

If you're talking about my post, I ment when it heated up enough outside to drain and refill the coolant.

My old roommate drove around in an old Crysler K-car through an entire winter with a frozen solid, straight-water filled cooling system. It died in the summer, talk about irony.

Your car was froze up.. you need more antifreeze

-40C and -40F are nearly the same temerature

Next time when it gets that cold.. Stay home

I will never goto work if it is colder than -25.. it's not worth the abuse on your vehicle

I'm... amazed an RX-7 will start at -45.

Scratch that. I'm amazed *any* car will start at -45.

If you get a coolant tester, you can find out what temperature your coolant is good for. I believe a 50/50 mix is only good down to -35 or so, so unless you did something special for the winter, your coolant may very well have just turned into a block of ice.

Fahrenheit is a graduated scale. -40 C is pretty much EQUAL to -40 F!
anyways, you guys can take your Imperial bullshit and shove it! lol

romeo, where are you in Canada? it hasn't been -40 here all winter

oh, they do sell coolant that is fine at that temp, but it has pretty bad cooling properties...i really hope you are using a block heater and keeping the car inside (garage) at night!

i Live in winnipeg Manitoba, we usually call our city Winterpeg hehe, but ya for real, our temp went to -48C, alot of cars didnt start and overheated, i've even witness a car infront of me that day that overheated too! hehe

anyways, i do keep my car in the garage overnight, the incident happend while i was on the way home from work..i work eve shift..

i dnt plug my car because i dont like the way fc's block heater was designed, i believe that fc's block heater makes this hot glowing metal or watever at the side of the engine, and if my car were to leak any flamable liquid then my car would rather catch on fire...

in short, i'd rather want my car not to start from the cold temp than flaming up
