Tearing into the 7 this winter...

This winter I should be taking apart most everything in the engine compartment to track down what's not working. I'm hoping to fix what needs fixed and finding more power while I'm doing it.

I'm pretty sure my 5th/6th ports aren't working.
Idle sucks donkey nuts.
Gas mileage sucks even bigger donkey nuts. Anywhere from ~9mpg to ~15mpg. Mostly 12mpg
No power after 6,500rpms
Fixing VDI which might be broken as well

I'm prolly gonna be tearing into everything BUT the internals of the engine and replacing what I can (and afford). I wanna know what everyone's opinions are for some more poweras well. I don't feel like rebuilding (that might change) so porting is outta the question (for now).

Pinapple Racing Exhaust Sleeves (Do I have to tear into the engine?)
SAFC-2
Exhaust of some sort (prolly RB single)
Porting the TB and intake
Emissions removal
Throwing A/C (that doesn't work) and P/S out
Deleting the ABS (doesn't work either)
Replacing all the vaccum hoses
Maybe an electric fan
Sending injectors to be cleaned and all that jazz
Regrounding of things

I might end up rebuilding anyways. The motor might just suck. It had a rebuild before I got it but it might not have been broken in right. I'm hoping for a stout reliable N/A until I get outta college. Most of these plans depends on what a compression check says of course.

Nope, you don't have to tear into the engine to get the sleeves out.

What may be the symptoms why you think your 5th and 6th ports are not working?

There is no power after 6,500rpms and it just kinda drops off and won't go past 6,800rpms. This is under a load of course. When revving freely it will redline just fine.

There is not a difference in the rate of acceleration around 3,800rpms like there was in my S4.

Good idea, but read some threads on them, and make sure they are VERY WELL SECURED. People have drilled & tapped through the back side of the sleeve, dinged the sleeve to secure them, etc. Make sure they don't come free, because while they won't fit, they can knock the rod on the end of the sleeve free, and that'll do some serious damage on the way through the engine. There's discussion about how effective these are, but I have them in my engine and I'm happy with my high RPM power.

SAFC-2
Not a bad idea, but I'd put it lower on the list than other stuff. It can be helpful, but there are better places you can spend your money (speaking as someone who has one).

Porting the TB and intake
I don't want to say it's a waste of time, because people have reported differences on a NA, but I'd put this in the list of things to do if you're bored & out of beer. You really need intake & exhaust work for this to make a significant difference. Also, porting the intake runners will reduce intake velocity, which will reduce low end torque. Some people care, some people don't. At least on my daily driver, I'm a bit sensitive about my low end, and I don't want to lose any of it. Having my 6th ports open at low RPM drives me nuts (they're on a switch right now).

Emissions removal
EEEE! If you can do it, go for it. Getting rid of the cats & putting in a presilencer helps the engine make more power, and getting rid of all the *junk* in the engine bay is really nice. This would be a good time to replace your fuel filter & fuel hoses too (from the hard lines coming up under the car to the fuel rails and back).

Throwing A/C (that doesn't work) and P/S out
Go for it. You might want to have a shop see if there's any Freon left in the A/C system before you vent it to air.

Deleting the ABS (doesn't work either)
Enjoy!

Replacing all the vaccum hoses
There aren't many left after the emissions removal. Make sure you keep track of which ports on the throttle body are vacuum taps, and which are just fresh air taps.

Maybe an electric fan
*shrug* Simplifies the engine bay, frees up a bit of power, and it sounds like you have a S5, so the current draw isn't as big a concern as it is for the S4 people. Once you pull the A/C & PS, emissions, and mechanical fan, you'll have one simple engine bay!

Sending injectors to be cleaned and all that jazz
Good idea. I should do that this winter too.

Regrounding of things
Also a good idea.

Sounds like you've got a good grasp on what you want to do this winter. Have fun!

Russ that is exactly the response I was looking for.

I already have an upgraded clutch and flywheel so I might stay away from porting the intake runners. It can be a pain as it is with the already low torque the rotary has.

The SAFC-2 might come later. Next spring Steve Kahn is coming up to our BBQ to do some tuning for $350 and I figured that with the rest of my mods that will hopefully go in this winter I will need a good tune and having a SAFC-2 won't hurt.

Other ideas I'm toying about are a S6 alternator and an electric airpump.
