tacometer not working

hey guys, i just got an 87 na 2+2 and i had some questions about the tach, ever since i got the car(which was a whopping 3 days ago) the tach hasn't worked along with the temp guage, and i have looked at the dizzy toward the front and there is a wire that is not connected and there is a yellow wire from the fusebox next to it that also isn't connected, i tried connecting them but no luck.
suggestions?

I believe the tach signal runs of the trailing? coil pack. My temp gauge never worked, didnt care, they suck. (even tho s4 are better than s5 temp gauge). Do your self a favor and buy a good electric temp gauge, and tee it into your BAC coolant line. Thats what i did and works like a charm. Also keep searching.

What you call a distributer is the CAS on the on front cover to the top right with a black circle cap. DO NOT TOUCH THAT FOR NOW. I just ran codes on my car, didnt help me but i feel it may help you. It might tell you if your coil pack is bad. Dont buy/ replace things you dont know are problem yet. Heres the link about how to make a LED code reader for 10bux.

check your reverse switch under the car on the backside of the transmission. Mine shorted out somehow on the freeway in the middle of a 12 hour long drive and I lost my tach, temp, boost, and oil pressure gauge.

well the wires melted together... I cut them apart... and replaced the reverse switch in the transmission and rewired everything. If that is your problem it will fix it. But there's a good number of reasons why your meter fuse will blow. It's the 7.5a if I'm not mistaken.

Jack the car up and get under it and test that reverse switch out. If its it... then replacing it will fix your problems.

I could have told you months ago when it was my problem from all the things I found from searching but not off the top of my head. Sorry

But I did find a good bit from searching on here. Surprisingly it is a common problem but the result of it comes from different areas and not everyone has the same cause. I just got lucky.

When I had my frist RX7 the tach stopped working once on it. I asked the PO (my neighbor) and he said if you go way over redline if will not work the next time the car is fired up. I dont know how accurate this is, but if you over rev it everytime you drive it that may be why? If you can get a aftermarket tach that works with a rotary you can check the coils signal with it to make sure its not your tach itself that is broken I suppose.

^^I call BS.....on your neighbor.

Alright that leads me to believe your CAS and both coil packs are good if your can runs perfect. I hate electronics, more of a mechanical person. Im sure someone will give you the input you need.

Ok maybe it was just that car. I went about 500 past redline once and all the gauges but speedo stopped working and I asked him about it. He said its a factory thing, maybe it was just a factory electronic gremlin lol.

the trailing coils can be completely dead, and the car will seem to run fine.

Lol @ tacos...

Check fuses. It's a good, easy first step.

Also, I've had the tach stop working for no reason very rarely, but next time you start it, it's fine.

As said, what you're calling the dizzy is the Crank Angle Sensor. The trailing coild near the back driver's side corner of the engine compartment has a wire that sends the engine speed info to the computer and Tachometer. It also has an unconnected wire for a hookup to an external tachometer for troubleshooting/service. The leading coil also has a similar unconnected wire, but it doesn't send engine speed info to the computer/tach.

edit: The temp. gauge sender is below and to the left (?) of the oil filter. It's the tiny sensor screwed into the housing below the oil filter with a single male pin. The larger mushroom shaped sender is the oil pressure sender. See if the former is plugged in. The colour is yellow/black for the temp sender.

edit: get the FSM...see links below or check archive/stickies.

I'm having the same issue. but the trailing coil is also not firing. still working out the bugs. I first got this car it wouldn't crank; had a bad clutch switch. Second was it woudl crank, but not start; had a bad ground wire for the fuel pump. Now, my current issue is, Ihave no fire from trailing coil, as well as no tach. Hopefully i'll catch the issue soon. I'd like to drive this car. lol.

The tach is driven off of the trailing coil. If the trailing coil doesn't fire the the tach won't work.

To the OP, try checking for spark on the trailing coil. If that is good then there is a blue and yellow wire iirc that drives the tach that connects to the trailing coil.

ok but my car runs really good so im sure the trailing coil pack is working, and where would i be able to use one of these external tachometers??

Failed secondary coils will have no noticeable affect on performance. Why cant you just test is for spark and be sure?
