I am assuming this is an original TII, not a swap. If it is a swap, make sure the injectors are the right impedence for the harness. I know this sounds crazy, but when I did my TII swap, I ended up accidentally using an 87 harness with the resistor block with high impedence injectors. The connectors were so bad on the 87 harness so i used the high impedence connectors from the cut engine harness. To cut to the end, this created endless problems that took me and my local Mazda dealer about three months of troubleshooting till I noticed. The car would fire and run fine for about a minute, then go into fail-safe and surge, backfire, run like ****. Restart and repeat the same ordeal. Just trying to through out more ideas. If its originally a TII, it shouldn't be a problem.

It has all the characteristics of a car with the AFM disconnected at the afm OR the wires from the afm to the ECU have an *open*.
The afm is not used for starting the car. Once the rpms get over 500rpm, THEN the afm takes over control of fuel delivery.
Personally I'd get a digital meter out. Go to the ECU. Open the FSM to the Fuel section. Find the pages called CONTROL UNIT. It has a listing of what each and every plug on the ECU should read when the key is ON or at idle.

alright guys its been a while school has started agian and i have been busy with my 85 but anyways. i have checked everything listed here. i have went back and started all over checked everything fuel pressure checked to see if the pump was wired wrong checked the ECU for an "open" wire. still notting everything is what it should be. still no luck. its got new plugs/wires distributor the timing is right everything checks out. what now? can a bad ground cause this? (yes i have checked) but just asking. i have no idea what to do
