T2 Problems

just got a 89 T2, the guy i bought it from said its been sitting for almost 8 months... The car surprisingly started right up.. The thing is it would only hold idle as long as i kept my foot on the accelerator, as soon as i let off it would die. i also noticed that in the short ride from where i bought it to my house(maybe 5 minutes) The turbo/manifold were glowing ridiculously hot?

It would help to know what modifications have been done to the car. Like intake, exhaust, catalytic converters removed, tuning system (if any), FCD, boost levels, etc.

Assuming you were not driving the car very hard for the 5 minute drive, it sounds like there may be a problem with the air-fuel mixture.

Sounds like you should of test drove the car before you bought it. But there would also be a major problem with your cooling if the manifold was that hot. There could be something wrong with your intercooler but im not too familiar with turbo systems. But what I do know is that if it ever gets that hot from riding the engine hard, its best to let the engine idle just sitting in place so you dont end up ******* up your turbo by welding it in place. Good luck man

Typically a glowing red exhaust housing/manifold are due to either extremely lean or extremely rich conditions. If you weren't driving the car hard during that five mintues, I doubt it is extremely lean condition. I have a hard time believing the EGTs would get that high during a short period of regular driving even under very lean conditions. Under extremely rich conditions the extra fuel can ignite in the manifold and exhaust housing causing them to glow red.

A list of modifications would definitely help the diagnosis. As for the idling problem, could be a vac leak, TPS issue, or it could be bogging out from being very rich.
