switching engines

I have an 86 with a blown seal and I found a rebuilt 87 with transmission. Now someone told me that I'd have to jack the car up and drop the engine and tranny out the bottom of the car and install the new the same way since I'm replacing both. Is that true? If so is it easier that way?
Oh and if anyone's interested I'll be selling the old engine and tranny. The tranny's fine( only 50k on it).
No external parts though.

I just took an engine/tranny/turbo out of my '88 last weekend. I pulled everything out the front of the car with minimal effort. I did have to jack up the car so the tranny wouldn't hit the floor on the way out. I don't think dropping the engine/tranny underneath would be easier.
