Surging at cruising in 4th and 5th...

So I've noticed this waaaay back when, when we still had the autobox pos tranny. Back then it would surge at cruising. It was nothing massive, but definately noticeable... It feels like the car loses power for a a quarter second, and then surges when it gets that power back. It does this on/off surging for about ten seconds, to where i get tic'd and downshift WOT...

So after teh 5spd swap, I figured the problem was gone... A couple weeks after driving it around...

its baaack..

Last night I was crusing at around 50 in the hills and it just did it again. Loss of power, than back, then loss again. I don't know what it is. It feels like a mild event of the car having not enough power for the gear/rpm.

Only thing is, im at a fine rpm for crusing at the time it happens...

Any ideas?

Have you tried reseting the TPS this is usally the main cause of surging, I had very minor surging in my TII in 4th but the new alt fixed that problem

check for vac leak, and check your MAP. when it surges does it go away with acceleration?

it doesnt go away with putting the throttle down, downshifting well into the power band is usually the wuickest way to save it

slightly broken internal contacts on the water thermo sensor plug- caused by being hit by that BS harness standoff on the alternator lower bolt nut- only seperate when the engine's warm & you're just cruising along, and then only for a second or two- that's my guess (can ya tell it's happened to me too?)

green plug on the sensor behind the alternator- check it out for cracks and abnormal play- like I said, just a guess...

Wayne, does the ECU retard the advanced timing based off of this? I know the plug you're speaking of, and its a little bastard IIRC... Green square with a japanese snapping paperclip around it?
