i had this problem as well. the chain is off. me and my dad rebuilded the WHOLE thing (disassembling the chain & adjusting) and it worked for a while but it got messed up again. ur better off slapping on another one. that's what i ended up doing.

Take it apart and see what's wrong. There's a section in the fsm on the Sliding roof. It sounds like a problem with the slider on one side (aren't I a smarty). Maybe try using the emergency handle to open/shut it to help determine the problem???

Respecognize!
mine just wont move much on both sides. but that is something to worry about later on. car isnt quite running yet. but mine tries to move, gets alittle up the stops. might just be old age and not being use. ill probably take it apart and clean and lube everything.

On my '87 base, it started out being difficult to move and needing physical help. Then it was just jammed. I pulled the sunroof mechanisim to see if it needed cleaning, and it turned out that the cables had rusted clean through. Chances are that you're going to need to pull your sunroof and replace it. If you're lucky, when you pull it, you'll find it just needs some severe cleaning and lubing.

Before you go through the trouble of disassembly, clean the sucker as well asy you can. Find someone with a compressor and blow out everything. Clean both sides with WD-40, remove it with rags and Q tips and then use whilte lithium lube. I had the same exact problem and spending several hours cleaning fixed it.

One word of caution if ou try cleaning it all out with WD-40. That spray can and will go everywhere, as will the grease and crud in the sunroof drivetrain. Make sure you protect your paint and interior with tarps and masking paper before you start. Otherwise, your paing will look like crap, and your interior will smell like WD-40 forever. Fortunately, my paint already looked like crap, and I like the smell of WD-40.
