stumbling

I was driving my car today(89 RX-7 GXL) and it stumbled between 3k and 3.5k. Never happened in the higher gears, just 1st and 2nd. By stumble i mean like when someone learns to drive a clutch the first time, and the car shudders a bit, that kind of thing.

The car is totaly stock right now, only had it less than a month. What kinds of things should i look at? I should mention it didn't always do this btw, i got past the trouble range a few times with no problems, also it stumbled once at about 2.5k i think. Only planned maintinence right now is just replacing spark plugs, wires, oil, and oil filter next weekend, should i expect to need to do more to fix this problem(its only happened today btw, on my way home and i havent driven it since then, a little worried). The check engine light does come on momentarily, while its stumbling. Doesn't stay very long though i didn't even notice the first few times.

Any help appreciated, thanks

Might be a bad grond to the coils. I know when my trailing coil was not grounded well, it would stumble, and the engine light would come on. Check those grounds!!
