How many of you have removed your power steering pump? I am not a big fan of power steering, i find that i loose feel of the road with it. Plus this season AutoXing I would overcompensate in a slide and loose it almost.....What are your expereinces with running without it on the second gen 7's? When i removed the pump from my 85 gsl i just linked the two hoses together and filled the steering box up with fluid...Should i do the same on the 87 I have or is the system a lot different? Or should i just remove the belt and say forget about saving the weight? Thanks in advance..

i just swaped my ps out for a manual rack. i have a few rubbing problems with the universal joint contacting the frame, but it just needs adjusted. I didnt like it at first, but im begining to get used to it, plus its about a 30+ lb weight savings and really clears out the engine bay. makes it a lot easier to change spark plugs too. the major downside is it jerks when you cornering hard and hit a bump or something.

How Many Of You Strong Arm It?

By strong arm in mean run with no power steering....

I want to remove the power steering pump because i don't like the way power steering feels...I removed it from my 85 gsl, and I feel like the handling response is much better now..Have any of you done this and if so did you just link he inlet and outlet hoses together? Or should i just leave the thing in there and remove the belt..........the extra wieght removal would be nice though....thanks in advance..

All of the cars I have driven up until I got my FC were power steering. Hell, even my dad's boat of a Monte Carlo had power steering. Anyways, my FC right now came without power steering and I like it. Only thing I have to say bad about it is parallel parking is a PITA. Got to really crank the wheel like hell when moving slowly... good workout. Other than that, no complaints. Feels like I can feel the road better and control it better.

So you have to change out the rack? You can't just pull the pump off and link up the inlet and outlet hoses?

I have had both. I think the power steering system in the FC makes it too easy to get out of control. The non-power steering def. makes you feel more connected which makes the car easier to drive.

I pulled the pump out and put bolts in the holes where the lines attached to the rack. Leave some fluid in there to lubricate the steering gear

<<<<- Removed power steering. feels much better than stock power steering unit. Used bolts to replace P/s lines coming out from P/s rack.

Never thought about it again. One is because of engine bay room. two. about 25-30 lbs lighter

I had an 87 with a manual rack and loved driving it, but hated parking it. I'll probably put the 87 manual rack in my 90 though to clean up the engine bay and save weight.

My PS was already removed when I first got my 7. I totally agree with Relisys190 - clean looking engine bay.

One question tho: when you remove the PS, are there warning sensors that you have to take care of??

I hate the PS... I yanked PS, A/C and was getting ready to pull the emissions before I settled on the V8 setup.

I have no problems, even parallel parking the car. And I'm not a BIG guy by any means. If you can bench your weight, it's a BREEZE.

I have a manual rack. I love it. And the ONLY downside - is in a parking lot.

I just took off the belt, so its a little harder than no ps. I love it. If your tires are balanced and alined, it feels like you have power steering anyway.

My TII had power steering, my GTUs has power steering, my GTU has a manual rack. I don't like the manual rack. Its ratio is too small(20:1 vs. the ps rack's 15:1 or something like that). It feels like I'm driving a truck when I'm trying to have fun. Now if I could adjust the ratio of the rack, I'd be all over it, somewhere inbetween the 15 and 20 ratios. I've posted about it before, but there doesn't seem to be anyplace that does that kind of work.

I did it for a week. It was fun while the car was moving, there was more feel to the road. But parking was a bitch, so I bought a belt and now I can be lazy again and park with 1 finger.

If you're going to do it, do it properly and replace the power rack with a manual rack. While removing the power stuff and plugging the holes in the power rack works, it is far from ideal and is much harder to turn then the (wonderfully balanced) manual rack.

I took out the whole assembly, and plugged the rack with threaded bolts.

Still isnt that hard to drive.

You can use a smaller diameter steering wheel to alter the ratio slightly. I'm not sure how much of a difference it will make though. I have a manual rack but might be going with a 350mm Momo steering wheel later on.

I was surprised at the difference between the 91NA PS & the 91 turbo PS.
In the NA road feel was very light but I could over run the hydraulics with the engine at 4K in 1st.
For me the RPM sensitive pump was a dumb idea.
In the turbo the feel is light below 25MPH. Above 30 it seems to cut out giving you a manual rack feel.
The ground speed sensitive system in the turbo is just right, if you don’t mind the extra stuff under the hood.

I removed my PS and kept the power rack specifically b/c I like the feel and the ratio. I do not like the manual ratio. It's personal choice, just be happy with what you do.

My last one chucked the belt on the highway and I never bothered to replace it.

The current one came factory with manual steering.

Bingo...leave the PS rack in and just lift more weights. I find that I have no problem turing the wheel

Now my 90lb gf might have a problem with it. Just another reason why she can't drive my car.
