stripped steering shaft

one big nut hold the stcok steering wheel down. the threads to the shaft are stripped. the nut dosent "fasten" anymore. would i need to replace the steering shaft before i install an aftermarket hub (such as a MOMO)?

I would say re-thread it, but that would make me a little leery to drive with afterwards, just swap the column - its cake.

yeah found some picture of the hub mounted and it seems that i will need to replace the column.
