Streetports: California Smog Legal?
Streetports: California Smog Legal?
Hopefully my fellow Californians will be able to shed some light on this.
I just got my AE and it came with a new rebuilt street ported engine from Kevin Landers. Unfortunately the kids I bought it from did some of the sloppiest work I've ever seen with the install and managed to break off a sparkplug in the rear rotor housing. So it was sold without a smog cert. Should I even bother to retap it and get it running? or should I sell it?
Before you flame, yes I did search.

If they knew it was there, it wouldn't be legal- But they arent going to know as long as it doesn't lope bad and still blows clean.
It really depends on how big the port is.
That said, two of my friends have passed the sniffer in thier 1st gens with street ports- Niether was bigger than what I would call a medium street port...

Technically no, a street ported engine is not CARB legal, but if you have the majority of your emissions equippment still on, then it should pass just fine providing that the engine is running correctly.
Many people have passed smog in CA with minor to med. street ports.
But something to consider, that the 89-91 motors have higher emissions than the 84-88 motors, and if you get stuck, you might suggest that the motor has been swapped with a 89-91 motor (which is legal in CA) and go to a Smog referee station for the cert.
