Strange timing problem

My engines been running a little rough, so I checked the timing, and sure enough it was way off (the leading mark was near the top of the pulley). I moved the cas, lined up the mark, and everything seemed to be fine. But after turning off the car, and starting it again, the timing was back to where it was. I moved the cas again, and again the timing was fine until I turned the car off and on again. I stopped when couldnt move the cas any farther, but the leading mark was in the same place as when i started. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I am not sure about this but i am going to try to help you i hope it help. Since the timing is computer control you have to bypass the computer control to get the true timeing of your car. MOst of the time you have to brige a connector or something like that. If i am not wrong if the timing is always changing if the compute ris still controling the car so it would be impossible to get a true timing. Hope it helps!

Your supposed to jumper the initial set coupler....check out www.teamfc3s.com for the FSM (factory service manual). Its on the driverside, near the leading coil, green connector, theres two, the initial set is the smaller one (2-prong). Jumper it with a wire...

If your idle was over 1000/1100 rpm, that will cause the ECU to advance the timing. Make sure the timing is around 750, certainly below 1000 rpm and make sure the car is warm/hot prior to setting the timing. Sorry, I never set my timing with a initial set coupler, but that is a 86/88 car.

Look in the 91 manual at the Out Put Devices. See at the bottom of the chart where it shows the Igniter(Leading ignition Timing). See where it says RETARD at Idle During Warm-Up.

Your problem may be totally unrelated to the above, but I thought you might want to be aware of it. Most likely your car was full warm/hot when you did the timing.

In my manual, it says to do it. But to be honest, I've set the timing without it jumpered, and it worked...That idle being set is a good point.

It worked when I grounded the initial set coupler, this is on an 90 TII, and it seemed to be necessary. Whatever I tried without it grounded didn't change anything. Thanks for the help.
