Stock Turbo Sound?

Quick question.. what should the stock turbo sound like?

Every vid I've seen of a stock t2.. the turbo has been almost unhearable. In my car, however, it's loud as hell.

It's like.. a loud whine, to me it sounds right, but this is my first turbo car so =/ And I just read a post about someones turbo sounding too loud and it turned out he needed a rebuild, and my turbo was just rebuilt 800 or so miles ago.

My only mod that would affect the sound at all (i think) is my bonez dp..

it doesnt sound bad or anything, it actually sounds great, my friend said it sounds "just... amazing." (his words) this was after i drove passed him and he was sitting about 50 feet from the road.

any cause for concern? i dunnos. =/ any advice is appreciated

Ummm.. A DP shouldnt make your Turbo that loud. Are you running an intake of some sort? My turbo whine got more noteable when I put the cone filter in.

Thats pretty odd. Of all the TIIs I have been in, none of them had a SERIOUSLY noticeable whine from the turbo. Possible you have an exhaust leak at the DP? That would make the wastegate audible (very loud). Other then that, I dont really know what to tell ya.

Maybe they put a t04 on when it was rebuilt? Not that it would be louder... nvm.

Hmm i think I might have a vid where you can hear the turbo.. I'll host it somewheres.

I might have a leak.. but I kinda doubt it. I used to have a large exhaust leak in two spots.. at the turbo and at the bottom of the precat.. but those were fixed when i put the bonez turboflow crap on.

Action RT has a stock exhaust system with better flowing mufflers, and a cone intake.

His turbo spooling whine is surprisingly loud (stock turbine). I love it.

Check the torque on yer intake manifold bolts and the clamps on all yer hoses... Mine use to whine like that when it started to make boost because, after having to tear the intake off to put the RB downpipe on, the friggin manifold bolts gave up and streched out and it was leaking through the manifold gasketts (I know you are wondering why i had to take the intake off.... well, my car was COMPLETELY stock, right down the the heat shields over the stock exhaust... and you can't reach those friggin bolts that hold it on top from the bottom!!!)

Now that everythings fixed.. It still sounds like a jet airplane taking off, but its a good sound now!!! Also, I've noticed that the stock blow-off valve that i'm still using... (i know... i know) leaks through if you do anything other than mash the throttle when the rpms are under 3k... i've tried several, and even the 3rd gen BOV i have on now does the same thing... if you get on it above 3 grand and mash it, all you hear is the turbo spooling up.

But, seriously, I think you got a leak in the intake system after the turbo somwhere, even after the RB full exhaust swap, i couldn't hear jack from my turbo until I put the k&N cone on it...

I installed a RB 3" DP in mine last year, it sounds like a 747 going full power down the runway. The DP will make a big diffrence in sound, removing that big cast POS and bolting on a nice thin stainless pipe. you got to love hearing your turbo, I loved it so much I removed the radio! Between the turbo, 3" turboback to the HKS Hyper exhaust I really don't need tunes.

that doesn't sound like a turbo to me

shouldn't it be much higher pitched? I know mine is.
that sounds more like a gear whine or something to me.

did you mean to say 8,300? at only 830 miles, you shouldn't be hearing(producing) any boost yet. the motor is not ready yet.

hmm... I don't know, maybe I'm just hearing things.

also, I do have an exhaust leak at turbo -> downpipe area. that's probably it. it makes it sound much more like a high pitched whistle... kind of like the turbo Levin in the end the of initial D the 2nd stage. (but not quite that cool )

your sound reminds me of the sound my toyota tercel makes(but that's all the time)... or the sound my old N/A motor made. I don't know. whatever.

So I take it you know the proper break-in procedure.

You'll notice when you actually get to boost normal the turbo will spool in a much higher pitched whine.

Sounds just fine to me. Might check the stock airbox to make sure the filter isn't in there weird or something, too - that could cause a whistle.

Regardless, doesn't seem like something to worry about. If there's a lot of play in the turbo, it might be going south, but that'll take some time, and used turbos are cheap.

I have had that sound for some time now. I just had the turbo rebuilt and still have the noise. Checked everywhere for an intake leak including the IC(The owner of Mi Turbo had a cool way to test it. Take a bicycle innertube, cut it at one point and put the 2 ends on each end of the IC. Clamp them and put about 30PSI in(via the valve stem on the tube) and it should hold the pressure). Anyway, no leaks, new turbo, still have the whine. Maybe that's just the sound it makes.
BTW still no power either(time to rebuild the engine this fall)
