Stock TII Boost Gauge

Assuming it is accurate, if my stock TII boost gauge is topped out it reads 40 x 10mmHg. I calculated the conversion to psi and what I got means that if it is topped it is seeing only 7.74 psi. Is this about right? (I know I know, get a boost gauge, I have one on order...) Question being is that I have the FCD which supposedly tricks the pressure sensor into thinking it is seeing below the cut off, 8.2 psi or 8psi even, but the gauge pegs to where stock boost is and then creeps up, but never tops out which it should if 40 x 10mmHg is equal to 7.74 psi, no? (Hopefully this is true and I am not even hitting 8 psi yet, that would make me very happy )

on an '88 you're lucky to see that much. I THINK the reason you're seeing even that much is becuase of boost creep because the wastegate can't keep up.

I'm in the same situation. Don't have the $$ to do the fuel setup, and only running 5.5 lbs boost on my '90 TurboII with a full open exhaust.

by the way, my mechanical gauge shows 5.5psi, my stock one shows like 2.

The stock boost gauge is worth absolutely nothing for "real" readings - only pay attention to whether it's consistant or not, since that's all it's good for.

Hey Barwick-

I recently bought a 90 TII with 113xxx on the it. It has a cone intake racing beat 2.5 in exhaust with the downpipe. It does have the racing beat cat too. It also has a kenne bell fuel pressure regulator. I found a vacuum leak and fixed it, but i am making 7psi of boost according to a autometer boost guage. It also bleeds boost should it hold steady boost or is this normal?

Any idea why only 7psi? I thought it should be around 10psi with those mods?

Any ideas?

If you put an FCD on at the boost sensor, the stock boost gauge will also be limited to the amount of boost it sees. The signal wire going from the boost sensor to the ECU T's off just after the harness enters the firewall, and goes from there to the instrument cluster.

I had an HKS FCON for a while that puts the FCD next to the ECU. My stock boost gauge went to the second "O" in "Boost" .

Those of you with Guessometer (I mean Autometer ) boost gauges should re-do that plastic line going to the gauge - they're VERY tricky to install properly and are prone to leaking. A guy on the TeamFC3S forum just had the same problem, and it was a leaky fitting to the boost gauge. Go to a hardware store and get an adapter that screws into the back of the boost gauge that has a hose barb that you can run a regular vacuum hose to.

Or do like I did - huck the Autometer in the trash, get a decent boost gauge, and be positively shocked at the night and day difference.

should be 6.5 PSI on the 89+ TIIs I believe. I'm running ~7.5PSI from boost creep.

On the Series 4 I believe it's between 6.5-7.5 psi

On the Series 5 (89+) it's 8.6 PSI MAX. (FSM). That's why the stock boost guage goes up to 45 x 10 mmHG.

Since you have an FCD, check for intake and exhaust leaks, and get an aftermarket boost guage. If it's not more accurate than the stock guage (which it likely will be), it will be much easier to read.

As far as gauges go, I recommend pretty much any Japanese gauge. Greddy right now has the best bang-for-the-buck gauges - SUPER well built, fast and accurate, and reasonably priced. You can get the 60mm mechanical boost gauge for about $100.

Gauges aren't cheap, especially if you have to rely on them .

I was wondering how good of quality the autometer guages are. I have a boost and a fuel pressure guages mounted on the a pillar in a pod. I think they are the 52mm variety.

I think i will replace them with something better quality guages.

Can anyone recommend good guages that are readable at night? The autometer guages light up but they are very hard to read at night.

kleetuz....why not take the fcd off for a day and see if you hit fuel cut (8.6psi)?

Again, Greddy makes top-notch stuff. If you get the newer silver face gauges, they even light up amber at night - the black/white face light up green at night.

IMHO, Greddy is the way to go right now due to reasonable price and top quality. Apexi makes a killer mechanical boost gauge (I used to have one, and LOVED it), and it's around $130-140, but it's the only cheap gauge they make.

Keep an eye on Ebay - gauges pop up reguarly. I bought a peak/hold/warning Greddy boost and EGT for $300 combined a while back.

http://www.german-autowerks.com has the best prices going right now on gauges. I ordered a Greddy temp gauge from them, and had good, quick service.

Anyhow, the night visibility of the Greddy gauges is killer - the needle and JUST the numbers light up. It's very crisp and clear. The Apexi gauges are indiglo, which is super easy to read at night.

The Defi gauges are FANTASTIC, top quality parts, but they're pretty pricey. The new Defi gauges are amazing - they are like the new Lexus gauges that are totally black when off.
