Stock Flywheel= Piece of $#!t

I was havign starter problems recnetly, so I went out and bougth a brand new Re-man bosch starter. I put it on the car, and after about 500 miles, I started hearing grinding. I though my new starter was ****. I orederd another one, because the new one was under warranty. So anyway, today, the starter came in, so i got to pulling the old new one out. Everything with it was fine. I looked at my flywheel, and it looked okay, the teeth were alright, so I touched it to feel it for any problems or anything and it moved. The Flywheel is Broken! What a piece of ****. I can spin the part with the ring all the way around etc, with no trouble. What the hell was mazda thinking with these 2 piece flywheels?
Has anyone else had this problem?

-Ian

I can't believe I broke the thing.

I guess the reason to put a 2 piece flywheel was to avoid people from changing the entire flywheel if it was only the ring gear that was broken...

but according to the FSM, changing the ring gear seems to be a real PITA

get a steel lightweight flywheel while your down there and dont want another piece of ****!

I've never heard of troubles like yours, stock flywheel seems to be pretty tough

Probably the same thing as all the other manufacturers that use them Most OEM flywheels have a ring gear that has been heated up to expand it then fitted to the flywheel and allowed to cool, forming a very strong bond. Snapping the ring gear is not exactly a common occurance.
