Cool Stock 88' Turbo II flooding...

I just bought a 1988 Mazda RX-7 10th Anniv. Turbo II with 63,400 actual miles, and when I got the car it was missing and sputtering bad. The guy that I got the car from really didn't know jack about rotary engines so what he had to say really didn't help much. I know for a fact that he was probably running 87 octane in it, because when I filled it with 93 octane and added fuel system cleaner, the sputtering almost completely went away. Now I am faced with the fact that everytime the car is driven for a while or fair distances on the interstate, it seems to flood out when the engine comes back down to idle. I had to remove the EGI inj fuse and crank on it for a few to get it started again.

I just got the car home today and haven't had a chance to do the routine maint like changing the plugs, wires, fuel and air filter as well as change the oil and filter....so once that is all done then I can begin to get a better idea as to the problem. In the meantime, I could use any advice you may have.

One more thing, I am thinking it may have a bad fuel pump because there's a toggle switch underneath the dash that cuts the fuel when you turn it on. I assume it just turns off the fuel pump. If that's the case, then if whoever had the car before me didn't turn that switch off, would that have caused the fuel pump to continuously run? If so then it may be bad because I also noticed more sputtering as the fuel level dropped below half a tank. Seemed to run fine with a full tank of gas.....anyway, I already typed too much but again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well I just finished changing the oil and filter, fuel filter, spark plugs and air filter. I had to order the plug wires so they'll be here tomorrow. It seems to be running a little better but it is still sputtering a little when you first give it gas. It's mostly in the 2000-3000 rpm range. It's not the imfamous 3800 rpm studder that a lot of these cars are prone to, but it's either getting way too much fuel or not enough. Anyway, any help would be awesome...

Get injectors professionally cleaned. It sounds like the someone put in a FCD. I'm assuming that if it was put in right, that toggle switch is it. It helps with the de-flooding procedure on our cars.

That was what I was thinking today....because the miss completely goes away after 3800 rpms which leads me to believe the primary injectors are probably really dirty and/or leaking. Right? Or ECU grounds?

that switch might be for your fuel pump.
I know on my s4 it would always flood, and the fuelpump relay was mounted up on the steering colum, I let it hang down, and set it up under the dash, so I could have easy access to it, and when it would flood, I would pull out the relay, crank it over, it would would turn over and start to burn the fuel that was in the motor, and the rpms would rise, when they would get up to like 2k I would plug the relay in, and it would start, that is what I did for awhile, it sounds like a pita but it wasnt bad, I wonder if your PO didnt just wire a switch for the same thing,
it could also be leaky injectors..
