Cool Stereo amp bypass a scam?

Hey guys-

Had an aftermarket stereo installed, and was told it would be extra because they had to do an "amp bypass". After handing me all my rusty old amps (headrest, etc) they pronounced all was well.

After about two months, the speakers in the doors started to short intermittently.

Why couldn't they just run new wire from the new deck to the speakers?

Did I get ripped off? I have a pioneer deck and stock sized new pioneer speakers in the stock locations (under dash and in the doors).

Not sure what an "amp bypass" is, but yes, all that they needed to do was run new wire directly to the speakers.

A lot of times car audio shops will just cut the amp out and splice onto the existing wires.. this is not the preferable method, but it is usually cheaper, as running wires through the rubber tubes with the door electronics in them can be a PITA, and take a lot of time, which means it's more expensive for you. A lot of people don't want to pay the extra for the proper procedure.

It is, however, just plain shoddy work (or an honest mistake) if your speakers are shorting out. Take it back, they'll likely fix it for you.

Running new wires is bypassing the amps...

Personally I would always run new wires, but unplugging the amp and joining the appropriate wires works too. That fact that they did this does not necessarily mean that is where the problem is. It could be a loose connection at the speaker or head unit, which is just as likely to have happened if they'd run new wires.
